A woman, a heavy cross on her back, travels the landscapes and crowds of an unnamed country. Over the images, the faraway voice of a child calls for its mother, accuses her, rejects her. In this experimental first feature, Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese combines the personal and the political. From a distance, he contemplates his birthplace, having left Lesotho for Berlin. The mother in the film is revealed to be Mother Earth, against whom he is rebelling. His outmoded, disturbing speech reveals impatience and frustration with a society buckling under the weight of history, religion and vested interests. Powerful slow-motion sequences give weight to the words with fierce violence, nevertheless inseparable from deep attachment.
