MS Slavic 7 Sofia Bohdanowicz, Deragh Campbell

Films index A to Z

Sofia Bohdanowicz ( Maison du bonheur, RIDM 2017) is one of English Canada’s most compelling young filmmakers. Here she works with actress Deragh Campbell to create a delicate, ironic and sensual hybrid film. A young woman (Campbell), her great-grandmother’s executor, goes to Harvard to study the correspondence between the old woman – an exiled Polish poet named Zofia Bohdanowiczowa – and another Polish writer who seems to have been her lover. The difficult task of deciphering the dead woman’s words is soon compounded by family and bureaucratic snafus. A reflection on the sometimes-impenetrable materiality of family archives, MS Slavic 7 blends melancholic poetry and deadpan humour, in a deliciously ironic tone.
