Nardjes A. Karim Aïnouz

Films A to Z

The latest from Karim Aïnouz (Central Airport THF, La vie invisible d’Eurídice Gusmão) follows a young Algerian activist for 24 hours, in the process documenting one the biggest mass protest movements of the 2010s. Launched in February 2019 in opposition to Abdelaziz Bouteflika’s candidacy for a fifth presidential term, Algeria’s Hirak Movement is embodied here by Nardjes, a young woman activist brimming with life and hope, on a day with great symbolic import: March 8, International Women’s Day. Aïnouz returns to his father’s homeland to capture the movement’s incredible energy and reveal its connections to earlier generations’ struggles for independence. In the heart of the action, his camera captures the spirit of youth determined to build a better future. (Charlotte Selb)
