International Feature Competition

Of Fathers and Sons Talal Derki

Film index A to Z

After Return to Homs (2013), Syrian filmmaker Talal Derki went home once again to film its tragic condition. Passing for a pro-jihadi journalist, he wins the trust of Abu Osama, a leader of the Al-Nosra Front, a local chapter of al-Qaeda, who welcomes him into his family. Derki straightforwardly records the daily life of the loving father and ruthless warrior. The filmmaker pays particularly close attention to the distinct paths taken by the family’s two eldest sons. While the elder is preparing to leave for a training camp for young fighters, the younger shows interest in school. But whatever happens, only war awaits them both. An unforgettable look inside a world without a future, where childhood and innocence no longer have meaning. (BD)
