Josiah Wilson was adopted in Haiti by a couple from Calgary – a father who belongs to the Heiltsuk First Nation of Bella Bella, B.C., and a white, non-Indigenous mother. At the age of 21, Josiah learns that those in charge of the All Native Basketball Tournament will no longer recognize his Indigenous status, thereby excluding him from his third tournament with the Heiltsuk community’s junior team. For Josiah, this upsetting situation raises difficult questions around identity. With careful camera work and thoughtful editing, Yasmine Mathurin delivers a skillfully constructed, many-layered documentary. A powerful film addressing sensitive issues, One of Ours reveals the tough road to healing, as well as the power of love and solidarity. (Programming Collective)
