The human space

Ostrov - Lost Island Svetlana Rodina, Laurent Stoop

Ivan and his family are one of the few left on the forgotten Russian island of Ostrov on the shores of the Caspian Sea. Once renowned for its plentiful stocks of black caviar, islanders now resort to illegal fishing on risky patrolled seas. The impressive cinematography accentuates the grim and barren landscapes of this dystopian universe and reinforces the islanders’ isolation and desperation for a better life. The vintage colors of the film coupled by the atmospheric music amplifies the local decor of old Soviet interiors against the vast silver blue skies, where the only hope and connection to modern Russia comes through the lit television screens.
