La bête humaine

Over the Limit Marta Prus

Film index A to Z

Rita Mamoun is at the end of her rope. From the film’s first shots, she says her body is completely spent, and her eyes reveal profound distress. At 20, the young Russian woman is already a veteran of rhythmic gymnastics, and she is starting what could be her final year of competition, in which she needs to triumph to reach the Olympics. Thanks to unprecedented and unfettered access to the athlete’s everyday life, Marta Prus is able to capture the enormous challenges and pressures facing top athletes. In Rita’s case, the tension is compounded by her father’s illness and the merciless – now manipulative, now unspeakably cruel – work of her coaches. “You are not a human being, you are an athlete,” she is told in a moment of doubt. That says it all. (BD)
