No Gold for Kalsaka

In the 2000s, Burkina Faso decided to start exploiting its gold deposits by making deals with international mining companies. The first open-pit gold mine opened in Kalsaka in 2006. What seemed like a chance to spark an economic boom proved to be an environmental disaster, with no recourse for the village’s stricken farmers. Michel K. Zongo documents the tragedy, meeting the residents and visiting the scarred landscape. Allegorical cowboys and an ironic storyteller complete the scene. A striking example of unjust and dishonest exploitation of African resources by developed countries, resulting in a mess with incalculable human and environmental costs.
