History Revisited

Pirotecnia Carlos Federico Atehortúa Arteaga

Films index A to Z

Mute Fire

When his mother suddenly stopped talking, Carlos Federico Atehortúa Arteaga undertook an exploration of the links between the birth of Colombian cinema and his country’s history. He looks into his family history and discovers its ties to history. In this fascinating investigation, home movies share the screen with archival footage and action movies, and the question of imagery becomes the central element of a political reflection. Armed conflict, government propaganda, current events, collective imagination: real and fabricated images can become weapons of truth and memory, or tools for forgetting and concealment, influencing the destiny not only of private lives but of entire peoples. A brilliant essay.
