Premières armes Jean-François Caissy

First Stripes

Jean-François Caissy likes to film places and institutions. In La belle visite, it was a retirement home; in La marche à suivre, a high school. This time he takes the same keen and detached sense of observation to a Canadian Forces boot camp. For 12 weeks, he observes and records the repetitive training routine, as well as the motivations, doubts and complex fabric of relationships between instructors, recruits and the institution itself. Keeping an appropriate distance and withholding judgment, the filmmaker documents the workings of the curious institution that is the army, where the slightest word or action must be tailored to fit a collective ideal.
