Retour à Genoa City Benoît Grimalt

Film index A to Z

Back to Genoa City

Mémé and her brother, Tonton Thomas, have been watching The Young and the Restless since 1989. When the filmmaker returned to his hometown, he asked the pair for a recap of the episodes he’d missed, and the result was a rather muddled account. So what, exactly, do they see in the fictional world of Genoa City? Part film analysis, part family introspection, Benoît Grimalt’s film explores his ancestors’ history, from Naples to Algiers to Nice. Starting from what appears to be a simple anecdotal situation, his sense of humour always on, he takes a heartbreaking look at old age, memory and uprootedness. Thanks to movie magic, the encounter between Tonton Thomas and Victor, the hero of The Y&R, becomes a poignant testimony to the passage of time. (ACO)
