Want a Van Gogh or a Caspar David Friedrich, cheap? That’s what the painters of Shenzen make possible by painting late into the night, producing copies of famous canvases for their many customers. Demonstrating remarkable technical skill, they are as adept at hyperrealism as impressionism. They are artists and artisans, creators and makers, relying on both classic techniques and high-tech equipment. With an admirable sense of observation and composition, Paul Heintz revisits the question of work (following up his Non contractuel, RIDM 2015), expanding on his reflections on art history and access to beauty, all the while capturing the pervasive melancholy of solitary lives being gradually reshaped by virtuality.
