Hong Kong is a hive of relentless activity, where humans and technology seem to have merged in this megalopolis and its relentless noise and bright lights. On a high-speed thrill ride, things can go awry randomly, bringing flashes of chaos to unexpected places. At times, the city’s design is apparently aimed at replicating or referencing nature, which seems impossibly distant. In this experimental essay filmed in 16mm, Simon Liu presents a series of intense day and night images, made transcendent by remarkable sound design. This surrealistic evocation of a world on the brink of imploding, overcrowded and out of control, builds to a powerful crescendo. It is a kind of symphony for a big city in the 21st century.
