Boniface Mwangi, a.k.a. Softie, is a brave and charismatic activist and photojournalist from Kenya. He’s determined to fight the country’s corruption and the tribal rifts inherited from the colonial era. When he decides to stand for the country’s regional elections without consulting his wife, Njeri, the mother of his three children, he soon faces consequences for his decision. Torn between his love for his family and his sense of duty to his country, he has to manage domestic conflict while trying to run an honest campaign in a political system where everything and everyone has a price. An intimate portrait of the personal costs of activism, this first feature by Sam Soko captures the power and limits of idealism in a country in transition. (Charlotte Selb)
