Laura Huertas Millán: Toward a decolonized ethnography

Sol negro Laura Huertas Millan

Films index A to Z

Black Sun

The first in Laura Huertas Millán’s series of ethnographic fictions, Sol negro is also her most intimate work, being about her own family. At the heart of the film is her aunt Antonia, an opera singer and survivor of a suicide attempt. Through a series of scenes – observational, staged and entirely fictional – the filmmaker draws connections between psychiatric hospital, home and stage, against the backdrop of a solar eclipse: a metaphor for emotional obliteration.
