In a dark room, like something out of a David Lynch film, a couple must answer the invasive questions of two stone-faced agents. The tense atmosphere is heightened by the strange dental appliance one of the agents is wearing. Digging through private messages, separate interrogations: the interracial couple will be subjected to all manner of indignities, right up to being forced to dance to the point of total exhaustion. All for a visa. Inspired by interviews with immigrants, in this dystopian short film Jennifer Martin denounces the state violence inflicted by the United Kingdom’s immigration officials. Split screens, close-ups, expressionist lighting, the submission of bodies and beings: welcome to the present day. (Bruno Dequen)
