The Disappearance of Goya Toni Geitani

Film index A to Z

Brimming with sensuality and maturity, The Disappearance of Goya explores Lebanon’s violent past, delving deep into the memories, archives and conversations gathered by a young filmmaker born after the end of the Mountain War of 1983. “Your parents tell you stories, I can tell you a story, and all of them contradict each other”, quips a masked anonymous propaganda photographer. With a very performative and carefully designed mise-en-scene, filmmaker Toni Geitani, crew, friends and lovers, traverse the foggy landscape of conflict and generational responsibility, questioning every so-called truth left behind. Dealing with the past in order to understand his place in the present, Geitani achieves a thought-provoking and very inventive film, a bright new voice in Lebanese filmmaking. (SM)
