The End of Fear Barbara Visser

Film index A to Z

A giant solid red panel with a thin strip of blue to one side and a sliver of yellow to the other: Who is Afraid of Red, Yellow and Blue III by Barnett Newman, the pioneering abstract expressionist, is a painting that leaves no one indifferent. In 1986, after the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam acquired the painting, a vandal slashed it with a knife, and its restoration proved controversial. Barbara Visser’s captivating essay looks back on the episode, with numerous points of view and perspectives leaving to a deep reflection on the questions this one painting brought to the fore more than any other: questions of authenticity, posterity and abstraction, the ascribed or market value of a work of art, and an artwork’s role in society.
