An Da Shealladh
In 2017-19, Canadian artist Joshua Bonnetta, whose cinematic works have always been centred on sound, took an interest in the Outer Hebrides, an archipelago off the coast of Scotland. As in El Mar La Mar, co-directed with J.P. Sniadecki, Bonnetta paints a sensory portrait of a world where the supernatural is a constant presence. Capturing superb 16 mm footage, immersive soundscapes and oral histories in English and Gaelic, he explores the intersection of landscape and legend, immersing us in a fantastical atmosphere dotted with submerged towns, ghosts and magical creatures. The titular two sights refers to the clairvoyance of the local diviners, but it also evokes the visible and audible signals we are presented with, intertwining in a series of mysterious correspondences.
