Turning Tables Chrisann Hessing

Film index A to Z

Turning Tables starts with a series of close-ups of the colourful outfits favoured by Joshua DePerry. We get the impression that the artist is a whirlwind of intense life, who brilliantly marries pow-wow traditions with contemporary dance. Chrisann Hessing catches up with him in his Anishinaabe community in Thunder Bay, where he is very active in his work with youth, and in Toronto, where he works as a talented music producer and DJ, bringing together the sounds of indigenous, techno and house music. With this portrait of an inspiring musician and performer, torn between his powerful ties to his community and his dream of moving to Berlin, the filmmaker presents an inspiring reflection on the future, creativity and resilience of the First Nations.
