A River in Winter
We admire it often, but how well do we really know it? Filmmaker Félix Lamarche (Terres fantômes, RIDM 2019) invites us to rediscover the St. Lawrence River in the depths of winter. He boards the Amundsen, a Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker, and films vast icy vistas while interviewing scientists, who share their profound passion for the river. From contemplative observations of the majestic movements of the pack ice to glimpses of the fascinating microscopic creatures that live in the great river’s waters, this documentary is a journey both visual and spiritual. From the indescribably large to the infinitesimally small, the film inspires us to reflect on what we don’t know, and to marvel at the great mysteries of life and the underwater world.
