Four years after receiving the RIDM People’s Choice Award for her powerful documentary Ouvrir la voix, filmmaker Amandine Gay turns her attention to international adoption. Une histoire à soi is driven by the voiceover narration of five adults born in South Korea, Rwanda, Sri Lanka, Brazil, and Australia who were raised by French families. Their stories are deftly interwoven and illustrated by personal archives. By layering these visual and auditory elements, the film highlights how these people have been able to reclaim their own stories and fulfill their shared need to return to their roots. The film eloquently raises a number of important questions related to international adoption. (Programming Collective)
