Victory Day Sergei Loznitsa

Film index A to Z

Den' Pobedy

Every year on May 9, thousands of Russians and Russian-speaking Germans gather in Berlin’s Treptower Park to celebrate the USSR’s triumph over the Nazis. Carrying flags and wearing military uniforms and traditional costumes, they sing, drink and place flowers at the base of the monument honouring the 80,000 Red Army soldiers who fell in the battle for Berlin. With long static shots and the precise compositions characteristic of Maidan and Austerlitz, Sergei Loznitsa examines the fascinating choreography of a commemoration and its many ideological connotations. The glorification of Stalinism, ostalgie, denunciation of German hegemony, Putin-style nationalism: 72 years later, Victory Day is a one-day summation of history’s many and complex repercussions.
