Waiting for the Carnival Marcelo Gomes

Estou Me Guardando para Quando o Carnaval Chegar

In Toritama, a small town in Northeast Brazil, almost every house has a textile workshop in the yard. The work is exhausting—at least until Carnival when the sewing machines are unplugged, and the town is deserted. Marcelo Gomes’ childhood memories contrast with the current reality of the municipality, once a simple rural community, which has become the “national jeans capital.” The filmmaker shows family businesses subcontracted by the clothing industry. Listening to locals’ hopes and dreams, the film presents a diagnosis of its time by immersing itself in the complex work dynamics caused by neoliberalism.
— Camila Macedo, Festival Olhar de Cinema
