In California, a community hopes to preserve the last plots of an orange grove threatened by urban sprawl. During a conversation with her Palestinian father, filmmaker Zaina Bseiso reveals her goal of filming this situation, which to her is reminiscent of the tragic fate of Jaffa oranges. This discussion leads to a shared reflection on their experience of exile, the limits of the documentary film approach, and the role of fiction in presenting the Palestinian desire for self-determination. When Light is Displaced is a unique film that articulates the importance of creating a narrative to overcome one’s own history, thus confirming the political power of the creative act.
