The State of the World

Wild Relatives Jumana Manna

Film index A to Z

Parentés sauvages

In 2012, an international agricultural research centre was forced to leave the war-torn region of Aleppo, Syria, and relocate to Lebanon. A largescale replanting process was started using seeds preserved under the permafrost in the vaults of Svalbard, in the Norwegian arctic. Jumana Manna shows us the landscapes and people involved in this unusual event. From scientists to migrant workers, from the Far North to the Bekaa Valley, the struggle for life takes place on two continents. Structured in essay form, the film has a meditative outlook on our world, with a novel perspective on biodiversity and complex relationships, such as those between the local and the international or the individual and the state.
