Quiet as It's Kept Ja'Tovia Gary

In 1970, Toni Morrison published her first novel, The Bluest Eye, which told the story of a young African American woman facing racism in Ohio in the 40s. Struggling to negotiate her marginalized and persecuted identity, she develops a deep longing for the blue eyes she associates with whiteness. In this experimental response to Morrison’s novel, Ja’Tovia Gary explores the identity of contemporary Black women for whom, in the age of doomscrolling, the creeping internalization of discrimination takes a different form. The film is punctuated with interviews, performances, and symbolic inclusions of the colour blue, suggesting an ancestral and spiritual connection between the filmmaker’s creative desire and Morrison’s.
