In addition to its annual November festival, the Montreal International Documentary Festival (RIDM)is proud to present Quebec premieres of major documentaries year round with the RIDM+series, presented by Télé-Québec. This month, cinephiles will have the chance to see M,a documentary by French director and writer Yolande Zauberman. The film earned a Special Jury Prize at the Locarno Festival. Filmed in Yiddish at Bnei Brak, M exposes pedophilia in Orthodox Jewish circles in Israel. This highly topical film will be shown on Thursday, April 25 at 7 p.m. at Cinéma du Parc.
“M” is for Menahem, a prodigy with a golden voice who was abused by members of his community. Fifteen years later, he returns to search for the culprits in the neighbourhood where he was born, Bnei Brak, the world capital of Orthodox Judaism. It is also a return to a world he loved, on a path to liberation: his is not a quest for revenge, but for reconciliation. It is an unforgettable journey to a very dark place, in search of hope and fellowship.
“What is extraordinary about Yolande Zauberman’s film, M, is that revenge is quickly shown to be a false path, and what we witness is something much bigger and better: a form of reconciliation achieved thanks to the grace of the camera and the intelligence of the filmmaker.” - Libération
