RIDM+ are back!

***DUE TO COVID-19 EXCEPTIONAL CIRCUMSTANCES, THE RIDM+ ARE POSTPONED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE ***

The Montreal International Documentary Festival (RIDM) is back with the RIDM+ series presented by Télé-Québec/La Fabrique culturelle from March to May 2020. The first screening of the year is an unforgettable portrayal of a family caught between its country’s politics and the complex workings of international refugee systems: Love Child by Eva Mulvad (A Modern Man, RIDM 2017). The film will be shown at Cinéma du Parc on Thursday, March 26 at 7 p.m

Filmed over several years, Love Child follows Leila and Sahand, an Iranian couple forced to leave their country for Turkey along with their young son Mani. We are plunged into the chaos of an uncertain and frightening journey, one which the child does not yet fully understand. The family’s exile is motivated by the heavy punishment awaiting the couple should the authorities learn of their extra-marital relationship. Upon their arrival in Turkey, the family will try everything possible to obtain refugee status. But between the complex bureaucracy of international organizations, the couple’s illegal status, and the overwhelming influx of Syrian refugees, Leila and Sahand’s fight for a better life soon starts to feel like a quest with no end in sight.

Eva Mulvad takes an intimate approach, focusing on the family’s struggle for better conditions in the face of social conventions and the indifference of international organizations. The film is both a family drama and a clear-eyed look at the reality of life for many refugees. What does it mean to survive in a world without freedom? This is the unforgettable account of a family, united against all odds.
