Little Palestine, Diary of a Siege Abdallah Al-Khatib

Little Palestine, Journal d'un siège

Little Palestine (Diary of a Siege) is a diary of life under siege in what was once the largest concentration of Palestinians living in the diaspora. Prior to the Syrian revolution and war, Yarmouk was known home to over 200,000 Palestinians. In 2013, the Assad regime blocked all routes in and out of Yarmouk. Under starvation siege, its inhabitants are deprived of food, water and contact with the outside world. Abdallah Al-Khatib’s camera takes us through the district’s streets, meeting elders, participating in lively protests, and encountering children wise beyond their years. The film follows the destiny of these civilians during a series of brutal starvation sieges. Abdallah Al-Khatib composes an elegy to a place that resisted atrocity with dignity but that no longer exists. (WR)

This film is presented as part of the Focus Bidayyat : New Beginnings, presented in collaboration with World Records, and with the support of Critical Media Lab McGill and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.
The film's editor, Qutaiba Barhamji, will be offering a masterclass on November 20th, in the Fernand-Seguin theater of the Cinémathèque québécoise.
