11 September 2023 Festival

Denis Côté to present a Masterclass along with the Quebec premiere of Mademoiselle Kenopsia at RIDM

Press releases

Montreal, September 11, 2023 – Following its premiere at the Locarno Film Festival and its screening at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), Mademoiselle Kenopsia, the latest film by Denis Côté, will be presented to Quebec audiences for the first time during the 26th edition of the Montreal International Documentary Festival (RIDM) on November 21 at the Cinémathèque québécoise.

Mademoiselle Kenopsia tells the story of a woman who becomes obsessed with watching over anonymous interior spaces and occupying them. With this work, the filmmaker once again straddles the line between fiction, documentary, and experimental essay. Screening as a special presentation, the film will be accompanied by a masterclass by Denis Côté, who will share his outlook on cinema. This will spark a genuine reflection on the possibilities of a cinematic form that disregards boundaries and labels. Hosted by Nadine Gomez, this masterclass will be free of charge. An activity presented by the Association des réalisateurs et réalisatrices du Québec (ARRQ) which will also honour Denis Côté with a lifetime achievement award as part of this year’s Prix RÉALS.

Known for their frenetic and sensual musical realm that blends live performance, poetry and electronic music, French duo Potochkine will be in Montreal for the festival to perform at the Cinémathèque québécoise’s Salle Norman-McLaren on the night of the premiere. Sitting somewhere between techno, synth-punk and coldwave, the band perfectly captures the strangeness sometimes associated with the forsaken spaces featured in Denis Côté’s film. This concert will be free and open to the public.

Produced by Voyelles Films and distributed by h264, Mademoiselle Kenopsia will hit theatres after touring the festival circuit.

The complete RIDM lineup will be unveiled at a press conference on Wednesday, October 25 at 10 a.m. at the Cinémathèque québécoise, and made available online that same day.
