Montreal, Wednesday, April 11, 2018 – The RIDM+ film series, presented by the Montreal International Documentary Festival (RIDM), screens a new auteur documentary every month from February through June. April’s pick is the Quebec premiere of a film about an extraordinary woman and a little-known facet of the history of former Yugoslavia, The Other Side of Everything by Mila Turajlic. The screening will take place on Wednesday, April 25 at 7 p.m. at Cinéma du Parc, followed by a Q&A session with the filmmaker, via Skype.
The Other Side of Everything, the winning entry in the international competition at the most recent IDFA, is a quietly ambitious film that begins in the private confines of an apartment and gradually branches out into the history of an entire country. At its heart is a portrait of Srbijanka Turajlic, the filmmaker’s mother, a retired, highly respected teacher who was a high-profile peace activist during the Yugoslav war of the 1990s. For years, Srbijanka risked her own safety in the struggle against her country’s self-destruction. Now, despite her age, she is as committed as ever, and remains a sharp critic of the perils of resurgent nationalism.
Mila Turajlic deftly blends archival footage with free-flowing conversations, paying tribute to her mother’s political activism and exposing little-known aspects of her country’s recent history. Srbijanka apartment becomes an unsettling metaphor. In the aftermath of the nationalization of housing in the 1940s, a simple door, forever locked, separates two families, one rich, the other poor. It is a delicate cohabitation, imposed from above, that has lasted for decades – but the same cannot be said for Yugoslavia.
The RIDM+ series is presented by Télé-Québec.
