RIDM announces the return of the Unframing Documentary program for its 26th edition

Press releases

Montreal, October 17, 2023 - For the second consecutive year, the Montreal International Documentary Festival (RIDM) is proud to present Unframing Documentary, a program offering a cross-section of diverse narrative practices beyond the realm of cinema. Festivalgoers will have the opportunity to discover activities featured in this special program during the 26th edition of the festival, to be held from November 15 to 26, 2023.

Concert

A performance entitled Sonia Wieder-Atherton in Concert: A Tribute to Chantal Akerman will take place on Friday, November 17 at 7 p.m. at Cinéma du Musée. Images taken from the films American Stories: Food, Family and Philosophy and From the East will be projected at a slow pace, as Sonia Wieder-Atherton, the late filmmaker’s partner, mesmerizingly brings her cello into dialogue with the visuals, alternating between prayers, dances, and cadenzas. This concert is open to RIDM Passport holders. Tickets, at a cost of $25 ($20 for students and people aged 65 and over), are also available via the RIDM box office.

Listening sessions

Transistor Media and RIDM have teamed up to present the first Montreal edition of Kino-radio, a project inspired by the global Kino movement. From November 24 to 26, teams of Canadian and European artists will have 48 hours to create an original audio documentary of under ten minutes to be presented at a public listening session on Sunday, November 26 at 8 p.m. at the Cinémathèque québécoise’s Crave Room. This event is made possible thanks to the support of the Bureau International Jeunesse (Belgium).

With the help of documentary maker Jenny Cartwright, the festival is also offering three creative audio documentary listening sessions at Cinéma Moderne. The first, on Saturday, November 18 at 7:30 p.m., will bring together our favourites from the official selection of Phonurgia Nova, an organization that has supported the development of sound art for the past 35 years in France and now in Quebec.  A second, to be held on Wednesday, November 22 at 6 p.m., will focus on memory, while the final session, on Thursday, November 23 at 6 p.m., will tackle the theme of migration.

At the same venue, RIDM is proud to present the premiere of Cinéma Moderne, novembre 2023 by artist Julie Faubert on Saturday, November 18 at 5 p.m. This work blurs the boundaries between documentary and fiction, conjuring up our impressions and interpretations of the movie theatre as well as everything it elicits in its audience. The work will be accessible from November 15 to 26.

Panel discussion

A conversation about documentary practices in the performing arts will be held on Saturday, November 25 at 1 p.m. at the Cinémathèque québécoise. Driven by a desire to remove barriers between artistic practices, this panel will bring together artists from a variety of disciplines: Adam Kinner (choreographer), Olivier Godin (filmmaker), Karl Lemieux (multidisciplinary artist) as well as Mélodie Noël Rousseau and Geneviève Labelle (actresses and cofounders of theatre company Pleurer Dans' Douche). Drawing on different types of performing arts, it will take a closer look at the many forms of creative documentary expression.

Installation

Rounding out the Unframing Documentary program will be The Island Weights by artist Sky Hopinka, who is the focus of a retrospective at this year’s festival. His installation will be on view at OBORO (4001 Berri Street) from November 22 to 25 during the centre’s opening hours.

The full RIDM line-up will be unveiled on Wednesday, October 25, 2023.
