Montreal, July 17, 2017 – This July 21 and 22, the Montreal International Documentary Festival (RIDM) returns to UnionDocs (New York) for the second year in a row. In 2016 the RIDM screened two films; this year it will present a master class with Sylvain L’Espérance, followed by a showing of the director’s Printemps incertains (Shadows of Spring). The RIDM is very pleased to be able to collaborate once again with its close partner from New York for this “RIDM Takeover” program, presenting Quebec-made films in the United States.
The event will open on Friday, July 21 with a reception in the UnionDocs offices a 9 p.m., with music provided by a local DJ. This will be an excellent opportunity to meet Sylvain L’Espérance and the event’s organizers, and to discuss their work.
On Saturday, July 22, Sylvain L’Espérance’s master class will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. The topic will be experimental approaches to political issues in documentary film. The filmmaker will discuss his career path and the evolution of his avant-garde approach. The session will include excerpts from Combat au bout de la nuit and the entirety of his first work, Les écarts perdus, filmed in 16mm and running 10 minutes.
The day will continue with a 7:30 p.m. screening of Les Printemps incertains(1992). The film tackles a subject of particular importance to the filmmaker: the condition of Montreal’s old working-class neighbourhoods and the lack of consideration for their residents during the city’s major urban renewal projects.
The “RIDM Takeover” will conclude with a public reception attended by the RIDM and UnionDocs teams.
Our loyal partners, brewers Trou du Diable and Dieu du Ciel!, will serve their top products at the reception, giving the public a chance to sample some of Quebec’s finest beers.
