Montreal, Wednesday, May 9, 2018 – The RIDM+ film series, presented by the Montreal International Documentary Festival (RIDM), screens a new auteur documentary every month from February through June. For the month of May, the RIDM is pleased to present the Quebec premiere of Anote’s Ark. This first film by photographer and curator Matthieu Rytz is an unforgettable portrait of a man in a race against time and climate change. The screening will take place on Thursday, May 31 at 7 p.m. at Cinéma du Parc, followed by a discussion with the filmmaker.
The fight against climate change is one of the most pressing issues of our time. Despite warnings from numerous scientists, governments are failing to act decisively to limit the effects of a process that seems too subtle to provoke strong enough action. The situation is completely different for Anote Tong, president of the Republic of Kiribati. The rising sea level, population growth and climate change have put his nation on the verge of being swallowed by the ocean.
Anote's Ark documents one man’s fight to relocate an entire population in a dignified manner, and alert international organizations to the urgent need for immediate action. By following Anote’s travels and the fate of a young mother who has decided to move to New Zealand, Rytz creates a portrait of the first modern climate refugees.
The RIDM+ series is presented by Télé-Québec.
Matthieu Rytz presented Anote’s Ark in 2014 at the Talent Lab, an activity that takes place during Doc Circuit Montreal, the RIDM’s professional forum. The Talent Lab gives emerging filmmakers a unique opportunity to get professional feedback on their work in development.
