The Montreal International Documentary Festival (RIDM) is pleased to present its year-round RIDM+ series of documentaries previously unseen in Quebec, presented by Télé-Québec. In March, cinephiles will have the chance to see América by Erick Stoll and Chase Whiteside. Filmed over the course of three years, América is the touching and unforgettable story of three Mexican brothers united against the world, determined to care for their 93-year-old grandmother. It will be shown on Thursday, March 28 at 7 p.m. at Cinéma du Parc.
Diego, a young amateur circus performer, learns that his father has been unjustly convicted and imprisoned for abusing América, the family’s 93-year-old matriarch. He immediately leaves Puerto Vallarta to take care of his grandmother. With the help of his two brothers, Diego emerges as a natural caregiver. The story of Diego and América is inflected with awkwardness and irritation, but above all profound love. Erick Stoll and Chase Whiteside document it with a remarkably delicate touch.
Showing innate talent for capturing the complexity of human emotions, and alert to the ethical issues involved in a project featuring a woman who is by turns unpredictable, endearing and fragile, the filmmakers have made an extraordinary first feature. The film is a portrait of a dedicated, iconoclastic family and a lucid observation of the realities facing natural caregivers. Above all, América is a superb tribute to life and those who know how to face it head-on.
