RIDM in Carceral Establishments is a mediation program built around two components. The first consists of a documentary screening for a group of incarcerated people, followed by a group discussion, sometimes with the filmmaker present. The second is a creative workshop based on the documentary.

The RIDM in Carceral Establishments project aims to make documentary culture accessible to everyone, and above all to give incarcerated people access to engaging cultural programming, which they are too often cut off from, to stimulate their thinking, sharpen their critical eye and broaden their perspectives on the world.

Since 2013, these activities have been held throughout the year in three carceral establishments (Bordeaux, Leclerc and Joliette) and in halfway houses (Thérèse-Casgrain, Maison Transition Centre-Sud and Maison de transition Saint-Laurent).

In 2014, the City of Montréal presented the Montreal International Documentary Festival (RIDM) with the very first Cultural Action Award for its RIDM in Carceral Establishments project.
