In an impressionistic style, this film observes daily life of Tehranis during winter 2007, when the first wave of sanctions was imposed on Iran. Filmmaker Bani Khoshnoudi looks thoughtfully at several residents, capturing their voices as they reflect on the past, present and future. A People in the Shadows thus paints a nuanced portrait of society, revealing a desire for change independent of Western ideology, a latent uncertainty toward possible new geopolitical conflicts and the historical weight of the Islamic Revolution and the war with Iraq. It is an evocative and sensitive work that brings visibility to a people too often kept in the shadows by their political regime and stereotyped media representations. (HSB)
