With the Walker series that debuted in 2012, master of meditative cinema filmmaker Tsai Ming-liang takes the art of slowness to a new level. Inspired by Xuanzang, the VII-century Buddhist monk who crossed the expanses between China and India on foot, this work unfolds where film, exhibition, and performance meet. Tsai's artistic soulmate Lee Kang-Sheng once again embodies this walking monk, meticulously moving through the landscapes of various cities. His steps reveal the contrast between the serenity of his gait and the bustle around him under the eye of a static camera. Filmed in Washington D.C., Abiding Nowhere is the tenth chapter of an odyssey that, with its singular approach to time, plunges us into the beauty of the moment and invites us to reflect on the pace of modern life.
