Independence, to what end? This question opens Amílcar, an introspective journey through the legacy of the African agronomist, poet and revolutionary Amílcar Cabral, who led the anticolonial struggle in Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde against Portugal and was regarded as one of the most remarkable figures of his generation. The film is structured as an essay and takes the form of an imaginary diary assembled from previously unseen historical footage, reworked archival material and new allegorical images shot on 16 mm while a voice reads some of Cabral’s love letters. A film of great relevance to our own violent present, it reminds us that every struggle is forever unfinished and demands an unending stream of conviction. (ORN)
