Fleur de Feu
Filmed over several years in Japan, Brazilian artist and filmmaker Ana Vaz’s kaleidoscopic film essay explores the aftermath of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, as well as the Fukushima nuclear disaster. Hanabi (fire flower) is a loose adaptation of Yoko Hasuke’s Journal of a Radioactive Brain and is a tapestry of testimonies, places and fragmented vignettes. Treated as shards, these fragments bear the marks of destruction and are the seeds of a possible personal and collective healing in a fragile world where disaster could seem like the perfect fuel for pessimism. Yet in Vaz’s film, it becomes a hypnotic journey to reflect on what remains after the disaster and how to face the years ahead. (ORN)
