Larry (they/them)

In a time where bodies are relentlessly politicized, the reality of trans people is often darkly depicted. But for Larry, artist name Laurence Philomène, transition can also be a bright space to gently unfold. Through a double mise en abyme that plunges us into their colourful world, the filmmaker follows the artist as they prepare their retrospective Puberty, a pictorial account of their first two years taking testosterone. Boldly revealing both their body and everyday life, Larry explores being non-binary as a space of freedom where they can delicately deconstruct expectations without reaching a set goal. In intimate, dreamlike images, we find a community relentlessly seeking to regain control of its narrative, inventing ways of being and loving that don't exist in a binary world. It’s an everyday struggle, sometimes complex and painful, but always sublime. (SC)
