For over 50 years, entomologist Art Shapiro has travelled the same 10 routes to study butterflies. A proponent of slow science, research grounded in careful, systematic observation over time, his unique work has documented a significant decline in California’s butterfly population. The filmmakers match the pace of their ageing protagonist, accompanying him on many exploratory walks where he quietly builds on his view of the world and his approach to life, while carefully observing what unfolds in these ever-changing landscapes. Excerpts from emails to friends and colleagues appear on screen, offering a more intimate glimpse into his life, work, impending retirement and changing health. Imbued with friendship, Weeping Rocks presents a patient and delicate portrait of this modest yet extraordinary scholar, whose passion is admirable and contagious. (HSB)
