In a dehumanizing quest for knowledge and entertainment, non-Indigenous institutions legitimized the theft of Indigenous human remains and personal effects. The Michigan Anishinaabek Cultural Preservation and Repatriation Alliance brings together repatriation specialists from different nations and is engaged in an essential and ongoing struggle: repatriating and reburying Ancestors currently held in archives and museums. Returning the Ancestors to their people and land helps heal the communities’ historical wounds. This feature uses an essayistic approach, combining archival footage, interviews, reenactments and various formal techniques to chronicle this emotional journey and highlight different ways to relate to the world.
