In El León, a lifeless body lies on a ping-pong table in an auditorium at the National University of Colombia. News footage takes us back to when paramilitaries and the army secretly infiltrated the University, assassinating professors, students and social leaders. Through flashes of light and ominous sounds interwoven with various commemorative ceremonies, we begin to see how a space designed to welcome life was forced to accommodate violent death for which it was not intended. The auditorium is named in honour of León de Greiff, one of the “cursed poets” of Colombian literature. Throughout the film, some of his words resonate, such as “And at the turn of every path, may life grant me a beautiful death”: an echo of a profound desire to leave this world with dignity. (ORN)
