With Fly Fly Sadness, Ralitsa Doncheva continues her study of the Zheravna Folk Costume Festival that began with Let The Red Moon Burn, presented at the 2023 edition of the festival. Let The Red Moon Burn focuses on the culmination of the celebrations, the performance of the fire dance ritual, while Fly Fly Sadness depicts the events that frame it. Babas prepare traditional meals as children play together throughout the camp. Everyday life takes centre stage; the gestures and rituals of folklore seem natural to everyone. But there’s a tension stemming from the performative nature of the event. Through her sensory and immersive approach anchored in her observation of the participants, Doncheva questions the nature and the function of rites in contemporary Bulgarian society. (MF)
