Antonia, a self-employed lawyer, lives with her daughter Lena on the island of Sant’Erasmo in Venice, which is both emblematic and symptomatic of the climate crisis. Through a subtle narrative, this hybrid fiction weaves together their daily lives in this precarious landscape, cradled and threatened by the expanses of water constantly in view. As news reports reveal the shortcomings of international law in protecting vulnerable populations, Antonia explores legal avenues to take action in the face of political inaction on environmental protection, and Lena adapts to the present with renewed curiosity. The rhythmic pace of the editing fragments time, space and actions down into refined pieces, creating emotional and intellectual resonances between shots and what remains unsaid. This poetic work observes a woman’s commitment and the nuances of compassionate parenting on the cusp of an upheaval that seems inevitable. (HSB)
