Filmmaker Christine Chevarie-Lessard has lived with anxiety since childhood. Appearing on screen, she chronicles her personal investigation into this taxing condition, guiding us through an introspective and remarkably candid narration. With a well-judged touch of humour and the help of a few imaginary characters, La peur, la nuit listens closely to the insights and thoughtful reflections of psychologists, therapists, neuroscientists, sociologists and philosophers, as well as members of an anonymous group for people with anxiety brought together by the filmmaker for this purpose. Through these specialists and personal experiences, this intimate and brave feature helps demystify anxiety, which deeply affects many people, while exploring ways to better manage or overcome it without becoming didactic. The film opens onto a broader social perspective, examining how fear transforms our relationships and societies and how it can be used as a tool of political manipulation. (HSB)
