Elsa returns to Spain to work on a documentary about Franco’s concentration camps, which are now almost erased from collective memory. For her research, she peruses the letters exchanged between Carmen and Ángel, two Republican activists imprisoned under Francoism. In these letters, love becomes their only space of freedom and a way to survive. When Elsa’s uncle dies, she must reconcile her project with the family obligations that follow. Galician filmmaker Eloy Enciso crafts a lucid film that shifts between the prosaic and the poetic, avoiding the emphatic tone and moralism of typical drama, with the aim of exposing hidden scars and resisting forgetfulness in the face of the world’s growing dehumanization.
