Opening of the Audio Installation Cinéma Moderne, novembre 2023

The RIDM is proud to present the vernissage of the audio installation Cinéma Moderne, novembre 2023 from the artist Julie Faubert, a site-specific sonic exploration of the darkened room as a key feature of the cinematic experience. By exploring the boundaries between documentary and fiction, but also with the imagery associated with movie theatres as well as the reveries and romance they can inspire in viewers, this sound creation delivers a destabilizing spatial experience in which the very existence of the screening room is called into question. The gestures, movements, and voices of cinephiles meld with whimsical moments that challenge the tacit muteness of their silent bodies.

Come meet the artist Julie Faubert and attend one of the 6 listening sessions (17h00, 17h20, 17h40 18h00, 18h20 and 18h40).

The project will also be available at Cinéma moderne, from November 15th to 26th, right before all the regular screenings.

This activity is free.

This program is produced in collaboration with Jenny Cartwright.

A program composed of works from the official selection of the creative audio festival, Phonurgia Nova.

The works presented will be : Par elles-mêmes by Judith Bordas & Annabelle Brouard (produced by France Culture) and Violeta by Anaïs Carton & Chloé Despax (produced by the CBAI with the help of ACSR Belgique).

13:00 Panel : Demanding Dignity
Panel : Demanding Dignity

How can images and video, shared locally or across the globe, support revolutionary Syria’s struggle to overthrow a brutal regime? Should images of the regime’s atrocities against its civilians be freely circulated so that viewers can contemplate the true nature of the regime’s violence, or should the circulation of images of violence be restricted to honour the dignity Syrians are fighting for? This panel discussion considers the right to a dignified image, how this debate unfolded in the editing rooms of Bidayyat films, and how it continues to shape global perceptions of the Syrian struggle.

Participants: Mohammad Ali Atassi, Stefan Tarnowski, Farah Atoui
Moderated by : Jason Fox.

Haram Party X RIDM - Canceled

We understand and respect the decision of our friends at Haram Party to cancel the dance night scheduled for November 18 as part of RIDM. We hope to welcome them in the future under circumstances more conducive to celebration.
Please note that the Cinémathèque québécoise will remain open to welcome our festivalgoers.

"Last month, the MONTREAL INTERNATIONAL DOCUMENTARY FESTIVAL - RIDM contacted us with their desire to bring the Haram Party spirit to their film festival by organizing a pop-up HARAM PARTY X RIDM.

As you may know, Haram Party is an evening to celebrate and dance tirelessly to the sound of Arabic and North African rhythms! Combining music from the East with the West, Haram Party brings together the Rai, Egyptian, Lebanese and Khaliji genres, fusing the traditional with the modern in a unique, exhilarating and inclusive experience.

We were thrilled to share our party with the RIDM audience. But after what happened and unfortunately still happening in Gaza and in spirit of solidarity with our community, we do not find it appropriate, in this time of grief and constant genocide, to organize this event.

We have therefore decided to cancel the event with the understanding and support of the RIDM team."
